Introduction and objective:
Vitamin D is a group of steroidal compounds that play an important role in calcium and phosphate metabolism. It exists in two forms, as ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol. Its deficiency is widespread globally, including Poland, especially during the autumn-winter season. This review aims to summarise current guidelines for vitamin D supplementation.

Review methods:
A literature review was conducted using current scientific material available in PubMed and Google Scholar, focusing on selected key words.

Brief description of the state of knowledge:
Vitamin D is a compound involved in numerous physiological processes.Among other things, it is responsible for normal bone growth, and proper functioning of the immune and nervous systems. Its deficiency is most common in people with limited sun exposure, darker skin pigmentation or certain diseases impairing absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, and is associated with conditions such as rickets in children, osteoporosis in adults, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, lipid metabolism disorders, autoimmune or allergic diseases (including asthma, AD). Identifying those at risk of deficiency and providing them with appropriately selected supplementation is essential for maintaining optimal vitamin D levels in the body and good health.

Vitamin D plays an important role in the human body, and the consequences of its deficiency may manifest themselves in various ways. Due to geographical location, the inhabitants of Poland are exposed to insufficient cutaneous synthesis of this vitamin; therefore, systematic supplementation in doses adapted to individual age groups seems to be crucial. It is also very important to spread knowledge on this subject among patients and doctors.
