ABSTRACT
Introduction and objective:
Aging is associated with progressive deterioration of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, which can lead to balance disorders and an increased risk of falls in older adults. Physical activity is considered one of the most important modifiable factors supporting the maintenance of functional fitness and postural control in the elderly. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of physical activity on static and dynamic balance in older adults and to analyze the relationship between balance and age, gender, and comorbidities.

Material and methods:
The study included 70 individuals aged over 60 from the Silesian Voivodeship, divided into physically active (n=36) and inactive (n=34) groups. A proprietary questionnaire was also used.

Results:
Physically active individuals achieved significantly better results in static and dynamic balance tests than inactive individuals (p<0.05). Comorbidities negatively affected functional test results.

Conclusions:
Regular physical activity has a beneficial effect on static and dynamic balance in older adults. Physically active individuals achieved better results in functional tests assessing postural control and motor skills. It was also confirmed that multimorbidity is associated with the deterioration of balance and functional fitness in seniors. These results indicate that physical activity can mitigate the negative effects of aging and be an important element in the prevention of falls in the elderly population.
