Introduction:
Shift work predisposes to the occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders including peptic ulcer, heartburn or hemorrhoids.

Objective:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcer, heartburn and haemorrhoids in men performing shift work in the Bogdanka mine in Leczna.

Materials and Method:
The study was carried out in the „Bogdanka” mine in Leczna. The questionnaire, which was designed by the author of this study, was conducted among 700 shift-workers, working underground. The questionnaire contained questions about: age, education, position and number of years of shift work, and the occurrence of selected gastrointestinal ailments. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using STATISTICA v. 7.1 (StatSoft, Poland) software.

Results:
Assessing the health status of the examined group, the relationship between age and number of years of shift work and selected diseases on the part of the digestive system was analyzed. The occurrence, frequency and duration of selected gastrointestinal complaints among respondents were examined. Nearly 40% of respondents complained about heartburn while working night shifts. Few shift workers suffered from gastric ulcer (11.9%), duodenal ulcer (7.6%) and haemorrhoids (10.6%).

Conclusions:
The study showed that the respondents with longer work experience more often suffered from gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer disease and hemorrhoids. Almost half of the respondents complained about heartburn. It seems that among people undertaking shift work, training should be conducted to present the principles of prevention related to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
