ABSTRACT
Introduction and objective:
Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal with high toxicity. Cadmium may negatively affect the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as manganese, copper, zinc superoxide dismutase, and catalase. Zinc (Zn) is a trace element necessary for the optimal development of all tissues and organs of the human body. One of the most important roles played by zinc in the human body is its participation in antioxidant processes. The aim of the study was to present the current state of knowledge regarding antioxidant properties of zinc in environmental exposure to cadmium in scientific studies.

Review methods:
The study presents recent scientific literature analyzed in a systematic review standard regarding environmental exposure to cadmium in the human population, referring these observations to the results of experimental studies on the antioxidant effect of zinc in environmental exposure to cadmium.

Brief description of the state of knowledge:
Cadmium can negatively affect the activity of enzymes, such as manganese, copper, zinc superoxide dismutase and catalase. Cadmium induces oxidative stress and ROS production, which are balanced by enzymatic (SOD, CAT, GPx) and non-enzymatic (GSH, vitamin C, vitamin E) antioxidant barriers. Zinc has a strong antioxidant effect, primarily as a component of superoxide dismutase (SOD) which, while catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide anion radicals to hydrogen peroxide, prevents the formation of other toxic free radicals and their derivatives.

Summary:
The presented environmental study confirmed a beneficial antioxidant effect of zinc in environmental exposure to cadmium. Zn supplementation prevents oxidative stress and its effects.
