ABSTRACT
Introduction:
Mental disorders among children and adolescents are often the cause of loss of purpose in life, and may even lead to suicide. The objective of the study is the presentation of the psychological condition of children and adolescents in Poland, basic regulations which enable health care offered by the State in the area of their mental health, and indication of a family as the environment offering support for a child, indispensable for maintaining mental wellbeing, on the background of institutional support. The state of knowledge in Poland, the percentage of children and adolescents who show mental disorders who require professional care is 9%, which means the necessity for providing approximately 630,000 persons aged under 18 with care. In 2015, as many as 143,000 patients used such care. Considering the number of suicidal attempts which ended with death among children and adolescents under 19, in 2014, Poland occupied the second position in Europe. In accordance with the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC), support on the part of a family is indicated as the factor decreasing the risk of mental disorders and increasing psychological resistance. In the majority of the countries where the study is being conducted (40 countries worldwide), an increase in the percentage of adolescents who had problems communicating with their parents became clearly noted in the 1990s. Since 2006, in Poland, deepening adverse changes have been observed in this area.

Summary:
The role of a family as the environment of support, allowing the implementation of own plans and dreams, may contribute to a decrease in the percentage of children and adolescents who need institutional psychological support, and build a more stable, emotionally stronger society
