ABSTRACT
Diseases of the oral cavity are a very frequent health problem concerning the total population, irrespective of age. Changes within the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity developing due to the impaired secretion of saliva are due to the occurrence of many systemic diseases and the ageing of the organism. The concomitance of many symptoms caused by xerostomy contributes to the clear decrease in the quality of life of patients. Knowledge of the symptoms, etiology, and possibilities of treatment of this nosologic unit seems very important, both for the dentist and family physician. Early diagnosis of this disorder allows the prevention of its consequences in patients from the groups at risk, and the covering with complex medical and dental care of this group of patients is very often the only way to improve their life quality.
