ABSTRACT
Introduction and objective:
Salt therapies, including halotherapy and speleotherapy, are used as adjunctive treatments for respiratory diseases, including asthma. It is believed that these interventions may have beneficial effects on the respiratory tract due to the anti-inflammatory properties of salt aerosol. However, the mechanism of action of these therapies in humans is not yet fully understood. The aim of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of halotherapy and speleotherapy as complementary treatments for asthma based on current literature review and to identify areas requiring further research.

Review methods:
Bibliographic databases, clinical trial registries, and auxiliary tools, were searched for studies on the use of salt therapies in bronchial asthma published between 2015–2026. Only four studies met the inclusion criteria, all of which involved paediatric populations.

Brief description of the state of knowledge:
Available studies suggest that halotherapy and speleotherapy may offer some potential therapeutic benefits for patients with asthma, but the results are inconclusive. The analyzed publications assessed a wide range of variables, including markers of airway inflammation, spirometric parameters, and patient quality of life. Discrepancies in the results may depend on the therapy parameters of therapy applied

Summary:
Current studies do not provide conclusive evidence of effectiveness of halotherapy and speleotherapy in asthma. These treatments were conducted on small groups, and only some were randomized, highlighting the need for further research to evaluate efficacy and to develop clear guidelines for the application of these therapies
