Nowadays, there is a growing interest in personalized diets based on genetic tests that provide new opportunities for analysis of the risk level and benefits resulting from the dietary intake of certain nutrients. It is expected that nutrigenetic tests will gain an increasing number of consumers. The aim of the study is to consider whether, based on current knowledge, the introduction of nutrigenetic tests for basic dietetics diagnostics is not premature, and where nutrigenetics can lead us. Although nutritional standards take into account the differences in nutrient requirements depending on age, gender, physiological condition, as well as physical activity and lifestyle, there is still a need for a more precise diet adjustment to the individual needs to maximize the health benefits of nutrition. Analysis of polymorphisms of selected genes can help manage the risk of many diet-related diseases. However, knowledge in this area still seems too little. During interpretation of the results of nutrigenetic tests, one should be very careful, considering that genetic polymorphism only modifies the risk, and does not unambiguously determine the occurrence of the disease. In summary, the most serious problem in the promotion of pro-health activities in Polish society are incorrect dietary patterns that may lead to obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis and serious consequences of folic acid deficiency. Nutrigenetic tests are still gaining popularity among nutritionists and consumers; however, it seems that until we can successfully implement healthy eating patterns in the larger part of society, nutrigenetics will play only a marginal role.
