Introduction: Medical and demographic data describing the health situation in the society of the 21 st century reveal increasing reproductive problems. Infertility affects 10–15% of couples in Poland. Similar percentages are noted in the whole of Europe. The birth of Louise Brown, the first child conceived through in vitro fertilization, was the turning point in the perception of issues associated with the incapability of having offspring. The potential of modern medicine in the field of assisted reproduction has resulted in numerous deliberations about its moral assessment.
Objective: Analysis of the selected social group’s opinions about the moral aspects of artificial in vitro fertilization.
Material and Methods: The study involved 374 adult inhabitants of the West Pomeranian Province. It was based on a diagnostics survey performed with the use of an original questionnaire. The results obtained were statistically analysed using the chi-square test for independence. The significance level was set at p≤0.05.
Results: Religious affiliation had a considerable effect on respondents’ attitudes towards the number of embryos created during IVF, p<0.05. Respondents who had children significantly more often (63.89%) declared their approval of in vitro fertilization. Religion was not an important factor in this issue
Conclusions: 1. The majority of respondents declaring themselves Christians would not accept the creation of extra embryos. 2. Most respondents having biological children declared they would undergo in vitro fertilization if they were unable to conceive a baby in the natural way.
