Introduction and objective of the study:
Osteoporosis and associated with it numerous, severe bone fractures are an increasingly common health problem, not only in Poland, but also worldwide. This trend may persist and even increase, due to the health behaviour of people and shortages of important nutrients in their daily diet. The aim of this study was to test the use of certain substances and health behaviours that affect bone turnover and risk of osteoporosis.

Brief description of the state of knowledge:
University databases, PubMed and MEDLINE were searched using the terms: bone turnover, osteoporosis, osteoporosis diet, diet therapy, dietetics, and the consequences of osteoporosis. 41 papers were selected that more or less corresponded to the subject and objective of this study. It turned out that a well-composed diet containing adequate amounts of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and vitamins (D, K, C, A), as well as other components of food intake, reduces the risk of developing osteoporosis. It is also useful in its treatment, especially for women during the perimenopausal period. The incidence of osteoporosis is also connected with lifestyle and specific dietary habits.

Conclusion:
A well-balanced diet and specific health behaviours have a beneficial effect on bone turnover and are applicable in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. It is therefore important to increase the knowledge of the population and awareness for them to be able to take care of their own health.
