ABSTRACT
The chemical composition of polluted atmospheric air has a negative impact on human health as well as on animals, water and soil. In effect, it causes respiratory system disease, blood system disease and cancers. Children and elderly people are among the most endangered as their immune system is weak. It is estimated that every year in Poland, 45,000 people die as a result of polluted air. On a global scale, the number rises to 7 million people. The main contributors to the air pollution are factories, power stations, coal-burning central heating systems and transport. In order to improve the quality of the air in Bielsko-Biała and other urbanized regions it is necessary to reduce sources of low emission of dust and gases coming from low emitters, such as chimneys in apartments and family houses. A large number of low chimneys create a noxious pollution which accumulates at the site of its creation. The low emission effect is the worst during the winter heating season. Temperature inversion, frosty days and lack of wind create unfavourable conditions for the spreading of pollution. Reduction of the low emission can be achieved by: connecting the dwelling to the district heating system, upgrading the boiler and central heating system, insulating the dwelling, double-glaze windows, alternative heating sources, such as solar panels and heat pumps. Industrial plants should seek to replace old technologies with new ones which are more environmental friendly. Endeavour to reduce air pollution is necessary for the wellbeing of the population living in the area. The aim of this elaboration is to present the concentration of chemical elements and particles, such as: nitrogen oxide, suspended dust PM10 and PM2.5, sulphur dioxide, benzene, benzo(a)pyrene, and to prove their negative impact on the human body
